Steve: Thank you for responding to this situation. The pin broke in two inside the end of the damper tray. I pushed the protruding piece back into the hole in the tray which allowed the sustain pedal to work normally again. I did not have time to really fix it yesterday so I glued a piece of a felt mute over the hole temporarily until I can go back there on Wednesday the 30th. I am only hoping the piece of felt will hold the half pin in place until I can get back to do a good repair. It sounds like some thick, gap filling CA glue would do the trick by gluing the pin to the inside of the hole in the tray. I will try this. If it does not hold, I may do what I had started planning to do before reading your message. I had started thinking that I would remove the tray by disconnecting all the dampers, take it out and drill the hole all the way through and make it large enough to take a 16 p nail. It is larger in diameter than the original pin and would hold up better under the type of playing done by these expressive high school students. I had begun to plan on experimenting on some scrap wood before going back there to see what size drill bit I would need to use to make the hole large enough to also take bushing cloth in the block to the right of the tray. I would also smooth the surface of the nail and lubricate it. But if your method works and holds it would be much quicker and practical. A larger pin should have been used in the first place.
