Hey Garret, After being nearsighted for most of my life, I have now settled on the following 3 sets of glasses: - Progressive lenses for general use. I can strongly recommend Varilux Lenses, which are (unfortunately) the most expensive, but are the most smoothly progressive of any I have tried, and give great peripheral vision. They are "infini" -focals, instead of bi- tri- whatever. The other progressives I tried were very bad at the edges of the lenses. - 1/2 frame mid-distance single focal length glasses. I sat at a variety of pianos and took measurements of what I needed to see. The eye doctor picked a nice mid focal distance, and they work great. Plus, because they are small frames, I can look over or under them as needed. - 1/2 frame strong reading glasses from a drug store. I sometimes use these straight for super up close work, or put them on in front of my vari-lux regular glasses for medium strength. Very flexible arrangement, but I admit it looks dorky. I don't look at myself, though, and it makes it easier to do good work. I do have 2 more pairs of glasses, but they aren't needed for piano work. A pair of Vari-lux sunglasses for driving and map reading, and a pair of vari-luxes for work at the office mostly. The 'distance' setting on this set is for computer screen distance. Fortunately my eyes are not changing as fast any more, so as a result I don't have to buy new glasses very often. It's been about 5 years now, and I am ready to get new ones. I'm putting it off because the old ones still work OK, and it will cost too much. I have been using bi-focals for about three years and now need to switch to either tri-focals, progressive lenses, contacts or some combination of the above. What has worked for you?
