[pianotech] spinet question

Lance,
On a piano like this, check for hidden plastic parts: damper flanges, jack flanges, etc. A few broken elbows may just be the first to go wrong.
In North Carolina, Kimball consoles sell on Craigslist for $600. Not my idea of a fine piano, but they are usually in good condition, and are a few steps up from weary spinets.

  A professional approach is to thoroughly assess the condition of the instrument, and to inform the customer of all potential problems and costs before undertaking work and incurring expenses. Your customer can buy a better instrument than this for $600.

    Thanks to all who responded. Guess I read brand wrong..was apparently MEHLIN & SONS...NOT MERLIN AND SONS...sorry 'bout that.. client is a lady who wants to start taking lessons as a hobby..not going to carnegie hall. Thought I might repair broken elbows and tune as see where we go from there.

    This piano is thoroughly compromised. It is not good for learning tuning, and not worth the parts expense for repairs.
    If you want a practice instrument for learning, look for a studio vertical.

      Looking at a spinet for possible tuning and /t repair. Anyone know much about maker named "Merlin and sons"? Can"t find anything in Larry Fines Piano Book. I am new in this field of piano tech and thought maybe some of you may have some info. Appears to be an ok piano. Action attaches directly to plate and cabinet..no action bolts.. still considering whether or not I want to tackle removing this action...since even experienced techs seem reluctant to remove action in spinet. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
