Wouldn't a small block of wood screwed into the keybed also work as a hand hold?   Maybe glued and screwed.

Alan, You bring up a point I had forgotten because we routed notches in our concert piano many years ago. One of the smarter things we did as it keeps the stage crew from pulling on the lid to guide the piano. In a pinch one person can move the piano off/on stage with the 'hand holds' cut under the keybed. I was concerned about the removal of the wood from under the keybed, but we never had any problem. The cut was wide enough to get your four fingers into the slot, and about one inch deep. Make the hole in the middle of the piano just far enough apart to reach comfortably with your hands beside you and approximately 3 inches from the front of the keybed. Try it you'll like it. The Bosendorfers we have feature notches under the keybed large enough to grab with the fingers of your palms-up hand.  This makes it much easier to pull the piano out of it's cave, especially when clearance is limited through the doorway.  I'm considering doing this to other pianos that may see the inside of the closet as well.   Alan Eder -----Original Message----- From: Pierre Pouliot <    To: pianotech at ptg.org Sent: Wed, 19 Nov 2008 2:52 pm Subject: [pianotech] Wood box for grand      Arial   Hi,      Arial   I'm asked an estimate to build a wood box to protect a Yamaha C7 grand that will be installed in a secondary school.      Arial   Is there already some plan to buid such a box?      Arial   I think I'll recommand a cover installed over it that will go over the complete rim. I'll also include a mackintosh cover to put directly on the piano.      Arial   Any idea or recommendations?     << span class="265052813-19112008">      Arial   Pierre Pouliot      Arial   PTG Associate member      Arial   Gaspé, QC, Canada __________ Information provenant d'ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version de la base des signatures de virus 3625 (20081119) __________ Le message a été vérifié par ESET NOD32 Antivirus.      0000,0000,EEEEhttp://www.eset.com      Arial   Traveling over the river or through the woods this holiday season?      0000,0000,EEEE   Get the MapQuest Toolbar   .
