David, QRS makes a retrofittable slow fall mechanism. aka FALLBOARD CLOSER It is basically a pneumatic pouch which a wire cable attaches to the inside of the fall. Good instructions for installation. Have successfully installed many of these in old (non-asian) pianos which did not have the slow dfall mechanisms.
