Chuck,
Number One: "1. Sand down to 600 grit and wipe down with acetone. Dye with high
quality shoe maker's leather dye, finish with ureathane. (Michael
Spreeman)"
I do, essentially the same,  except I like to finish with Tung Oil, which is a  renewable, tough finish. (I use it on my Work  Bench.<G>) Reason: I prefer the  "feel" of  the  wood on my fingers.
