Lance: There are some tools available, but a strategy is to: 1) cut a piece of free wire long enough to accommodate the two lengths of string, plus the length for the coils around the tuning pins, plus enough to make you feel safe... 2) holding the two ends of the free wire in one hand, make a bend in the length of wire halfway, creating a loop, then put clamps on the two free ends so that they won't fly away and you can keep the ends separated... 3) feed the loop under the bass strings at the point closest to where the loop can be grabbed toward the bass edge of the piano, then, using string hooks or other small tools, move the loop to the proper hitch pin and clamp it on with whatever is handy-a needle nose vice grip does well, even between the bass strings... 4) do your measuring, cutting, and tuning pin coil work without bringing the tension all the way up, constantly checking that the wires are not crossed and are going to the correct tuning pin... 5) using a string hook and some other small tool to push, grab the wire at the bridge and position it on the bridge; do the same with the other; if you are having trouble keeping the wire on the bridge pins, bring up just enough more tension .. 6) bring up the full tension and clean up your coils... 7) remember to remove all the clamps! Ask me why I suggest this. :-) Good luck. P In a message dated 12/22/2009 10:35:13 A.M. Central Standard Time, 88man at netscape.com writes: Replaced string on under area of overstrung section. Had one helluva time getting string on bridge pins in the proper configuration. Would GREATLY appreciate any tips on procedure, tools, gadgets, techniques, etc. to make this job a little easier for me. This was an old upright, and the bridge pins were located in East Jesus....hard to see, hard to get at, etc. This really kicked my old butt. Merry Christmas to all.
