Cy, I believe he's referring to the hammers on a grand being lifted/swung up toward the player so they over-center. As you push them back/away from the player, usually one or two will drop to the rebound rail faster than the others. Hope this helps, Dave Davis, RPT ________________________________ From: Cy Shuster <cy at shusterpiano.com> To: pianotech at ptg.org Sent: Thursday, January 1, 2009 1:35:38 PM Subject: Re: [pianotech] New Tools On Jan 1, 2009, at 12:32 PM, John Rhodes wrote: Dave & Jon: Happy New Year! An efficient way to do this is to lift all the hammers in one section (bass, tenor, treble) and using a straight edge evenly and gently push the hammers towards the rest position until they begin to fall. Note which hammer falls first, then remove the flange and check the swings. It should swing between 7 and 9 times. If it swings more than about 9 times, re-pin the flange. Continue this process until the fastest falling hammer swings no faster than 9 times. Follow the same procedure noting which hammer falls last. Again check swings, lubricating those that swing less than 7 times. John, I'm interested in this method. Being able to move quickly from key to key makes measurements more accurate, and I find it awkward to fumble with a whole set of weights (or even worse, the cheapo 16-8-4-2-1 stack I have now). Can you clarify this procedure from your document on the website (above)? Are you lifting the shanks with the ruler, and then dropping it quickly to see which falls first? "Push the hammers" is the phrase confusing me. Thanks for this process improvement. --Cy-- Cy Shuster, RPT www.shusterpiano.com ABQ, NM -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
