Hi David,

I'd strongly urge you to consider a saw with a riving knife if at all
possible - so much safer! You may know that UL regulations are slowly
herding/forcing the American industry in that direction anyway (newly-
designed saws must contain a riving knife as of three days ago).

Newer offerings from Powermatic, Delta, and Grizzly ( brand-spanking-
new G0690) all include riving knives, as does the newer and smaller
Saw-Stop contractor saw (so does its big brother). My lowly (but
amazingly accurate) BT3100 has one, and I wouldn't want to be without
one now. If you decide to go the riving-knife route, choosing one
that is almost as tall as the blade is much more helpful/convenient
than one that sticks up above the blade (if it sticks up, you must
remove it for non-through cuts, dados, and the like). Lee Styron's
SharkGuard company offers shorter retrofits for some saws with too-
tall riving knives.

Here's a little banter about riving knives, short fences, and other TS
safety considerations:

I know that you stipulated that under $1000 would be nice, and these
are going to push you over that amount. Safety is important, though,
and the Grizzly G0696 is only $1250. Of course I haven't used it, but
I know from experience that the (non-riving knife) G1023 that precedes
it is a quality saw, so I expect that the G0690 should be well-
designed and made. 603 lbs. of (mostly) cast iron....
