? Hi Alan
?Having used quite a few sets of no. 1's?personally,?I find the no. 1 pin size an elegant solution(as does Yamah, KAwai etc.)?if the pin is fit right for the pinblock material. It seems to work well with lighter tension scales. ( Only my Opinion)
??? However, I confess my Symphony D has a new maple block with a no. 1 & tunes quite well but if I were to do it again I'd go with 2's
????In my opinion if the plate flange being considered is thick ( ie.10mm ) a no. one to my tactile senses can feel more flagpoley than I like,
?especially if?the pin fit is a bit on the tight side. In this case I will strongly remonstrate with the pin or.....?simply I hate the feel & would rather use a stiffer pin
?no. 2.
? The type of block Terry & I make with the multi dense top cap mitigates a lot of flagpoling even with a thick plate flange and I think Terry would agree, no's aren't much of an issue.

Sorry for the time lag--just getting caught up on this thread. ?Interesting that you use 1o tuning pins. ?The one "experiment" I have heard about using smaller diameter tuning pins in a piano where there is plate webbing over the tuning pin field did not turn out well. ?The conclusion was that the smaller diameter pin flag-poled too much with the coil that far from the pin block (unlike in the "open-window" pin blocks of pianos like Bosendorfer that allow the coils to be just slightly above the block itself, not above the plate webbing, which adds several mm to the distance from the block). ?

But you have not had this problem?

Thanks,

Alan Eder

I haven't used #2 pins in one of these blocks - only #1 pins.?
