    I don't know how you would do it any differently.  Each party has to have some idea of the value of their own item or service as well as the other's, and come to an agreement.  I've done a bit of bartering in the past, but doing too much with another party and one or the other eventually percieves the value isn't equal.  
    Paul's post is a good one to keep in mind.
