[pianotech] tuning cold pianos (for Inauguration)

Dave, Jim and Terry,
Two things to help confirm well-founded suspicions (from an old Army band member):
1.  The orchestra for the Copland Lincoln Portrait was not ready to play and the conductor had not gotten them in position to play when the music started...it was a real scramble for a short time.  (And Tom Hanks didn't do much of a job on it, either.  I once played it with William Warfield narrating...quite different!)
2.  When the various dignitaries were announced and the Ceremonial Trumpets (possibly from West Point, possibly Fort Meyer) played, it was agonizingly real, instruments cold and out of tune, players working at warp speed to adjust.  THAT was live!  (We HATE playing in cold weather!)

I thought so too, Jim---pre-recorded, that is; or else amazing, incredible, synergistic performances from the sound people, the musicians, and the instruments. Tall order in 20-degree weather....

Actually, my musso friends and I wondered if what we were hearing was in fact "live".  Granted, we're talking Itzak, Yo Yo and other amazing players, but (a) sonically it was perfect, (b) everyone's pitch was spot on -- even in 20 degree weather, and (c) I don't recall the instruments being miked or wired.  (Maybe they were and I didn't notice.)  Anyone else wonder if they were perhaps playing along to a pre-recorded track?

Re: tuning cold pianos (for Inauguration)

On a related topic, I wonder who tuned the piano used outside at Barack Obama's inauguration. Must have been a real challenge - those were a few high-end performers on the stage - and the temperature sure looked COLD - and I noticed the sun shining directly on the piano (oh my!).
