Well, in some instances dabbling isn't a problem and will do no irreparable harm to the item dabbled with or to anyone's pocketbook or reputation. In other cases, learning is best done under supervision. While an extreme example....I would prefer that my brain surgeon not be a podiatrist who decided to dabble. Debbie L.
