So, Plättchenschraube means plate screw, Plättchen is the plate.

This could be the relation to dryness! Perhaps a loose screw 
  makes the friction of the hammer center too low. I don´t know the English 
  term, the German word is "Plättchenschraube". That metal part that connects 
  the hammer butt with its flange (disk? pad? shim?) is screwed with a screw. 
  Perhaps that screw is too loose due to dryness?

  Great suggestions. The nomenclature here for  
  "Plättchenschraube". is plate. Now isn't that easier to spell? <G>
