That was the umbrella wire I mentioned. We used to make our own from old
broken umbrellas.

There's a tool to ease the guide rail hole without removing the action.
That and a couple of drops of protek on the wire should help unless the
problem is a tight damper flange.

Lately I have had a lot of hanging damper complaints. (Northeast Humidity)
Any tips on a quicker fix than pulling the action, removing the damper and
easing the hole?  A couple drops of pro lube has worked on some cases, but I
am concerned about how long that fix will last.
