[pianotech] pianotech Digest, Vol 8, Issue 93 String hook in response to Allan Sutton

 Hi all,

Kent Webb was just here in Anchorage for a two-day seminar which was outstanding. He did indeed use that brass bar with the wire as a string hook. He said that it can be made using a piece of brass support rod from a pedal lyre cut to about 12 inches long, drilling an appropriately sized hole through it for a piece of piano wire to be attached, and and then making a small crook on the end of it. As a string leveler, the piano wire crook is hooked onto the string to be leveled with the tip of the brass rod directly above, then, the butt of the rod is placed against the area between the tuning pins and agraffs for leverage. In this position, the rod becomes the hypotenus of a triangle, one leg of which is the 'string hook' piece of piano wire hooked to the string to be leveled. Kent said that he favors tools that have multiple uses and that the butt end is grooved to be used to seat strings gently at the bridge pins, massaging the string, not tapping or hitting on the the top of the bridge which can cause damage however slight.

Take care,

David Cuffel

Anchorage, Alaska

Subject: [pianotech] string hook

Used for levelling the
strings, what is the Hart string hook ? Joe Goss uses that term on his
article about string levelling on his mother goose web site. For lifting as
well as lowering?

At the Postdam one-day
seminar last month, Kent Webb had a tool that was a long brass bar with a long
wire hanging by its side. He used it to “massage” the string to settle
on the bridge, but it was not the main use of this tool. Does any of this ring
a bell? Could it be a string leveller? The hook would be on the long wire, the
bar would be the [cantilever, lever, I don’t know the word] to [take
support?] or for [counter-bracing]?

I wish I could explain
this better. Sorry.

Thank you

Matthew,
Conrad is right on the money with his reply. I will add that these screws
are about 5" long and one is a different length than the others. As Conrad
has said keep the spacers and the screws in order. The breakage issue is a
facter. If the heads are silver colored there is less to worry about. The
screws more likely to break have a "Blued" look similar to a tuning pin.
When I give a proposal for any procedure that requires action removal on
these things I first back all four screws part way out . If the screw
twists back when you release the pressure on the screw driver and the thing
feels like silly putty that's the warning sign.
We have scads of these here in the North East and as Conrad has mentioned a
screw can break, but in my experience this is still a rare occurance.
The other factor although unrelated is that most of these have rubber
grommets that fit into the fork at the back of the key. They are often
petrified or at least on the way and can be noisy before you touch them and
worse after. They are cheap and easy to replace. I carry a few in my kit to
demonstrate to the client . I would plan on replacement .
As to the broken screw and it's removal and subsequent replacement you can
cut a slot with a small cold chisel and back the thing out or use an easy
out . Despite the fact that the screw broke the remaining section is
generally not frozen in the block and will come out without much trouble.
You will not find this length roundhead screw in the hardware store . I use
1/4" lag screws which are the same diameter and are available at the
aforementioned hardware store in the lengths that you need , Cut a slot in
the head with a hacksaw for your screw driver and problem solved.
If you are reusing the original screws put a little VJ on the threads and
turn the screw anti-clockwise until you hear-feel that click before turning
them in.
Lots -o -fun.
 Tom Driscoll

P.S. Check for loose tuning pins in the bass. Up here the non-bass pins can
be just fine and the bass sometimes too loose. Also make sure you have a
thin-wall tuning head-tip. The first several notes in the tenor section have
a very crowded tuning pin field and if anyone has replaced a pin with an
oversize one the thinwall might be needed.

Subject: Re: [pianotech] string hook

Hi, Allan:

I don't know of a Hart string hook, but he has a spring hook that is very handy for manipulating various springs. Not used for string leveling. Joe Goss has a string leveling tool that works as you describe- the wire does the connection to the string (hooked on the end) and the bar is the leverage. His tool is handy in that it folds compactly. I have one. It's not in my hand just now, but I believe there's one end that will massage a string, as there's a groove filed into it. It sounds like Kent Webb has a similar tool. These string leveling tools are very efficient because of the leverage against an agraffe. In fact, you could make one yourself with a dowel and short length of large gauge wire.

Using the common string hook with a T handle also works, but there's no leverage there, just using your strength to pull upwards. I have a hook from Don Mannino that has a unique end on it. His tool doesn't have the usual "J" shape, but has a slot that the string fits into for lifting. It also has a groove for pushing or massaging the string downwards. The handle is a T type. I'm not sure who sells the Mannino string tool.

    I hope this helps.
