Laura In addition to regulating each individual damper, did you check that all the dampers are adjusted properly on the damper lifter tray. It sounds like perhaps some of the dampers might not have enough follow through, (They're just barely sitting on the strings). and what you're hearing is a sympathetic vibration coming from a note an octave or octave and a fifth below the note you're trying to dampen.
