That works if the button felt is brand new and even. Another wrinkle on that
method is to use 1/16" magnetic strips under the strings so the hammers
block against the strip and then lower them until they just drop. Again, the
felt (and your finger pressure) has to be very even or the results are all
over the place. Also, the strips stay in place better on some pianos than
others, probably because of irregularities in the string line. 

None of these methods is perfect and they all seem like a big pain in the
tuckus until I compare them to bending over the piano for hours!

That's an interesting idea, Paul - how would you do that? 


Raise the let-off button until your hammer blocks against the string, then
lower the let-off button,  a nats eyelash, or 1mm. Feel your way through it,
you can always stand over the piano and check your work.
