After seeing your whiz-bang mod with the capstans, we decided to look into replacing the "standard" underlever system with the spoon/capstan endowed one on our model 275's. (Renner Germany offers the system in the white hard bound parts book as a complete unit.) My first visual impression was the same as yours. However, the SCS (spoon capstan system) has a different tray and mounting system which puts the spoon/ key tail felt contact at the same height as the standard underlever. The only modification we had to make was to cut the key tails to prevent them from contacting the wooden body of the underlever. After cutting the key tails, there was still plenty of cut-out for the key end felt so no further modification was necessary to the keys. The sos tabs end up a little higher which was a plus for us because of the bellyrail mounted sos rod. Robert mocked the system up in CAD to determine clearance issues and the geometry, but this could easily be accomplished with a bench mock-up. The top flange (the piece into which the damper wire is inserted) is closer to the bellyrail, so the system ends up being shimmed out from the bellyrail. Everything else, the stop rails, sos system, and pitman fit in swell. Robert is also working on installing the SCS system in a Steinway C and a Mason BB, apparently with no issues (yet). These jobs aren't completed, so, if you're interested I can report back with the gory details when he's finished.
