I don't know, whatever works. I trial fit and sneak up on it. 
The hole will be smaller in a poplar tray than it is in a 
laminated Renner tray.

I screw them in with a driver in my drill motor. That's one 
advantage I see to a hex head, as well as the minimal height 
it provides.
