I don't know either.... We have several practice room uprights with them. I'm considering just taking them out. I guess they're good if you live in an apartment or have very young players where Mom or Dad would like to have it a bit quieter. They're totally un-needed in the practice rooms in a college setting. Just something to take out and put in after tooooooning. BTW. I've found the ones from the factory occasionally pretty tight. If they're wing nuts, just use pliers to loosen them. for regular screw kinds, I just block up something behind them to get leverage on the screw. I don't really favor pinching them out from the ends, taking the spring mechanism, etc. out if I can avoid it. My 2c. Seriously, a lot of people I tune for don't even know what it's for. Of late I have been my pliers to widen the U that holds the rod that pulls the muffler down. That way It can be removed like the old standard Yamahas. Some have the wing nuts, but some do not. And rather than strip the screw heads, it is best to leave them alone. However, is there a particular method for removing those stubborn screws? Would liquid wrench work, or is there another trick? Thank you!
