[pianotech] ideal shop size

I don't know Dale. I can't be in Grand Rapids the year, but I'm hoping for Las Vegas in 2010. I am planning on retiring this year (69 yo). I'm finishing up a Baldwin rebuild and I have a Steinway in waiting. That will be my last. After that, I'm thinking about bringing someone in to do most of there building work and I'll just do the regulating and one day a week out tuning.

   Hey AL
    This is a great size building for one or two people. I worked in one that size for many years. Now it's 3 K ft. Some folks would say that's not enough but that wouldn't be Trix.
    SO when are you doing that Steinway Hammer vocing class zzzactly? Hmmm?

  My shop is 40'X28' and works for me. Whatever size you select, I would make it in two separate sections. One side for dirty work. Sawing, sanding, drilling, (polishing polyester <G>) with good dust control. The other for regulating, stringing, damper work, storage, etc. I can work on 4 pianos in my space, but no more than that.

    Hey John,

    Mine is 20x40 and it's tight, but workable.  I've got four instruments set up right now - M, O, 5' no name, and a 9'.  Three would be more reasonable, but it works.  I'd sure be happy to have say a 15 x 15 or so finish room.  I'd say shoot for 1000 sq. ft. and maybe a finish room.  More later, gotta go to bed.
