Powdered aniline stains also work.  Star used to make them in various earth
tones.  I've had some that have lasted for many years I don't know if they
are still available but I probably got them from Schaff.

The same, with the addition of small amounts of yellow and even smaller 
amounts of red chalk powder (Home Depot, for chalk lines) to blend with 
older darker wood.
