On consideration, that should be "dust emitting", rather than smoke.
All those big woolyboogers down in there had to come from *somewhere*.

PS: My spell checker wants to change woolyboogers to astrologers. Maybe
it's not so dumb after all.

For me, this is the biggie and a closer for selling the pitch raise to the customer. If I ask, “Does your child complain that your home piano doesn’t sound the same as the teacher’s piano?,” I will nearly always get an affirmative answer. We should hope that students are learning more than mechanical playing skills. They also need to hear pitch and the nuances of tone. While we can’t get much nuance out of a Betsy Ross, we can certainly help the pitch.

Welcome, Patrick!  Remember that Conrad sells flame suits...

Some of the downsides of leaving a piano "a fret low" (as a country church pastor once said):

... the bass sounds terrible, like a slack rubber band, and has no sustain.  Spinets especially sound a lot better at pitch.

... students hear a different sound than on their teacher's pianos, where they are judged

... students learn the wrong pitches

... you can't play with other instruments

Chuck and Julia and List,

This brings up an issue I have been wondering about.  Is there any reason to think that leaving a piano a half-step flat is actually harmful?  It seems that any time I run across a piano that's been left flat, it is likely to have separated bass bridge/apron, ribs loose, long bridge cap unglued, etc.  I  am thinking mostly of uprights if that makes any difference.

Also, I would like to be included in your photo list.

Also this is my first posting, I've been enjoying the list form the sidelines for a while and so want to express my appreciation to everyone who contributes.

Anyone know where you can get black action felt? Only thing I have found is 1mm thick felt and cloth - need thicker, denser felt.
Dying white felt has not very good results.
Thanks,
Gene
