I believe it is actually the core to wrap relationship that determines whether there is the need for a double wrap or not. There is nothing inherently better sounding about a double wrap than a single wrap. However, reducing the core wire dimension which can, as has been described, improve the tone may introduce the need for the use of a double wrap. There is a practical limit to the diameter that a single outer wrap can be with respect to the core wire without creating problems with the outer wrap coming loose.
