Another rational reason might be controlling the draft angle of the string. More coils can allow for the string to exit the tuning pin perpendicular towards the front bearing thus allowing for a tight coil without sinking the pin deeper than less coils woulkd allow. Granted it's a delicate balance and tight coils are perhaps another cosmetic industry standard which brings us right back to the beginning of this thread. UGGGH!
