[pianotech] sticking key

I tuned a small Samick grand two days ago. Things were sticking everywhere.
Damper levers, were sticking way in the back of the lever where it screws
into the rail. Hammer flanges were sticking, even the jacks. Repinning
these parts was the only solution. Some were sticking so badly, I had a
difficult time removing the center pins but, finally managed. Once
everything was repinned, the flanges reamed and properly fit with the right
sized pin, everything was working fine again. The key, pardon the pun, is
to locate the part that actually sticking. In my case, it was simple. Lift
the damper and it stayed there. Raise the hammer, it stayed there. Move
the jack, same thing.

Other times it is not so easy. If it lifts and sticks only with the damper
pedal and not with the key being used, it is probably located in the damper
some place. If the "key" sticks using the pedal, it could be in the action
or, it could also be something else as simple as a warped key slip that is
warped just enough to catch the front of the key just barely enough to hold
it down. I've encountered this with sharps catching the whites as well. So
many possibilities. Track it down using the process of elimination.

Martin, if you read Ed's post again, you will notice that the complaint was
that a note was sticking "when the pedal was used".

Now this indicates that without the damper's help to push the back of the
key down, the key stays down.
On this particular brand of piano, the culprit is probably the hammer flange
center-pin. And the fun thing is that
when you get to the piano it won't do it at first, but after playing for a
while it seems to heat up and stick.
Play the piano for a while and then take the action out. Raise all the
hammer shanks 90 degrees, slowly push them back
and watch them fall. You will find out which ones are problematic.
And when you find out which ones are, REPIN. lubrication won't work on the
long run.

Most likely he means the damper is sticking up on a particular note.
