I like the word stiction to describe the phenomenon. I think I read it on this list (Ed Foote?) and well...it stuck. :-)

I am a little fuzzy as to what symptom you are describing as "ratcheting". Could you explain a bit more what you are experiencing that this resolves?

(Snip) What I have done before to eliminate ratcheting wires in agraffes is to replace the wire.
