On the rail, there is a screw or a thumbscrew, that releases one end of the mute rail. Mind you, I have seen scratches on the other end as well. Newton isn't here to give me heck, so, sometimes vision impaired tuners, have to feel around for the hole, thereby resulting in some scratches. Or careless sighted tuners.
