Most hardware/lumber/hobby stores I go to here in Florida have both  
hard maple (well, some kind of maple) and red oak dowels. Nothing  
wrong with hard maple or any other good hardwood. I have simply  
observed red oak to be readily available and ideal because of its  
generous porosity. Likely a zillion times better than a Luan dowel.
