Sounds like the same stuff they used on my old worn out linoleum flooring. I've scraped, heated, and even used nasty chemicals on the stuff to no avail. Next I'm gonna try dynamite. Nope, I often use burnt shellac myself, and this isn't it. This stuff looks and acts like construction adhesive. Very tough, resistant to cutting or scraping, dense and rubbery.
