Before using a softener I would try needeling first. 25 to 30 stitches on both sides with 3 needles. Beginning from the shoulder moving up to the crown. BTW, Palatino is a Hailun. The customer moved after I tuned it twice & I lost track of him. He called last week he's been "touching up" the tuning on it for the last 2 years since he moved & would now like it professionally tuned & a non-working damper repaired. He also would like the tone softened. The piano is (obviously) of Chinese manufacture. My thought was to treat the hammers with Isopropyl Alcohol as I have read about on the list. My question is where on the hammer & how much to apply? I have used hammer softening & hardening agents from suppliers in the past but from what I've read on the list the alcohol seems more appropriate for this application.
