[pianotech] Ahhh, Piano talk at last! :>)

The wire cutters can work well (though be careful you don't accidentally
snip them off at the level of the cap) but prying will damage the bridge
cap. If you are intending to recap that's ok but if you are only going to
resurface then you have to find a different method. Generally these pins
are so loose that a small vice-grips will grab them and pull them out
easily. You can also use a grinder to taper the jaws of the vg so that it
is less likely to run into the cap itself. Just work slowly so as not to
damage the cap. I have run into caps where it was just impossible to get
them out without cap damage (a MH comes to mind) and I had to recap. Not
that big a deal really though it does add an unanticipated cost to the
customer.

Try some fine wire cutters, they can grab, then protecting the surface of
the bridge, just pry up.

I'm working on a Baldwin R from the 60's. (pre hitch pin weird thing) Why
did they bury the bridge pins down so far? To restring a piano on these is
a bear of a task! Only 3-4 millemeters (or millemetres for you
northerners). They give you nothing to grab when trying to pull the pins
out! I have about 20 of these beasties at UNL and I hate them for
restringing or bridge fixing.

What have you done with these?

Thanks

I guess I'll whine at them, then. And I will, but not as much to those that
didn't bother to vote at all! They have NO say.
