Marshall First, assume the broken hammer is in the piano. Unless they opened the top, and saw that it was missing, it might even be in the action. But, if the hammer is truly missing, do the best you can with what you have. Maybe one of the ones you've got will fit. But if not, call one of the "older" techs in your area and ask if they have one they would give you. If you want to be sure you've got the same size, take the number one hammer off the piano as a guide. Don't worry too much about the density of the new hammer, at least not on a Kimball. But even at that, if there is a little difference in tone, you should be able to do a little voicing on the "new" hammer, to make it match the tone of the others. I won't know if the hammer is in the bottom of the piano until I get there on Monday. I have som eold spare hammers here still connected to the hammer sections that were given to me when I started in piano tuning back in Chicago. If the hammer is missing, what is the best way to find as close to a match as possible from these hammers I have? If it were a Yamaha or Kawai Steinway I could just get one like I did last Spring for a Yamah. The reason I'm asking is this. I want to make sure it's a good fit because if I find one that matches up to the neighboring hammer lets say, doesn't the density of the hammer felt play an important part as well even if the size is similar shouldn't the density be as well? thanks Marshall Marshall Gisondi Piano Technician Marshall's Piano Service pianotune05 at hotmail.com 215-510-9400 www.phillytuner.com Graduate of The School of Piano Technology for the Blind www.pianotuningschool.org Vancouver, WA -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
