The mixture does not restore to a smooth finish but rather enhances the old finely crazed finish by removing dirt and 'treating' the finish. Much the same effect as wiping on lemon oil only a little more aggressive. You have to be careful with shellac and varnish finishes, it will take it down to the wood if you apply too much.
