Y'all have been disssscussing the possibility of the way wood is cured to being the cause of major expansion/contraction of the keybed/action. It's my opion that the way wook is "cured" may have something to do with it's longevity, I don't think it causes the wood to react differently! I think you need to look at the design of the keybed(s) themselves. Many olde upright companies left "expansion" joints, i.e. gaps between the key bed panels and frame work. The old craftsmen and designers knew how wood worked under adverse conditions. Somehow, this "knowledge" has been forgotten or dismissed in many current designs, IMNSHO.  The use of particle board and such, really puts the whole exansion/contraction thing into a different zone of calculation. THEN, we add the "Select Hardwood" thingee that puts further speed bumps into the design factors. All, IMO, not to the betterment of stability. I would suggest putting an olde upright next to the "new" pianers and see the difference.<G>
That's my take on it.
