Roger: You are 110% correct in your analysis. I agree with you completely. I have encountered old uprights stored on a porch outside for years that were nothing but a ball of rust and 100 cents flat. I was sure I would break every string. Yanked it up 130 cents, do a second tune and not one string broken. The next piano, a 3 year old Kimball in good shape, snapped one as soon as the pin was nudged. There is little rhyme or reason to string breakage and almost no predictability. Mike Kurta, RPT N.
