Joe A good source for information about Harpsichord construction can be found in the book Harpsichord Design and Construction by Evan J. Kern, Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, ISBN 0-442-23348-5. In the section on drilling the tuning pin holes he suggests taking a sample of the wrest plank and drilling a series of test holes in varying diameters smaller than the diameter of the tuning pins.... The tuning pins should turn smoothly under firm pressure.... if the tuning pin turns too hard and with a jerky motion, the hole is too small. pg. 92. I was once told that it was ok for the pin to be so loose that you could turn it with your fingers, as long as it stayed at pitch.
