[pianotech] Helping out a GH-1

In 1991 Yamaha provided a kit for changing the five lowest unisons on the tenor bridge. The kit had the new bichords, damper felt, and even a drill bit and a couple new hitch pins. I can't remember if it came with new agraffes. (I'm thinking it didn't) And instructions.

Unfortunately the person who put the kit together for me put in #10 bridge pins instead of hitch pins. I didn't realize this until I was at the customers home. I ended up doubling up two strings on one hitch pin for two of the unisons. Nobody needs to scold me for this. I know that wasn't the right thing to do. But even so, it was a big improvement. Nineteen years later and as far as I know they're still holding. This customer has since left my area.

There was nothing done to hide the empty tuning pins. You just had to decide which ones you wanted to leave empty.

I know Yamaha doesn't provide the kit any more. They may even claim they never did.

I'd like to know more about the weight added to the bottom of the bridge.
