Greetings,

I have a 2004 - 6'1" Kohler & Campbell KGC650 that I'm restringing (due to beach rust). I mic'd all the strings (making sure it was on clean wire and not any rust to interfere) as I removed them and came up with a plain wire string scale of:

notes - wire size
2 - 19 (.043)
2 - 18.5
4 - 18
4 - 17.5
4 - 17
4 - 16.5
4 - 16
4 - 15.5
tenor/treble break
6 - 15
6 - 14.5
6 - 14
treble/high treble break
8 - 13.5
8 - 13 (.031)

After removing the strings, I noticed the lightly stamped scale on the back side of the bridge in the notch. It differed from mine by a 1/2 size across the board. In other words, where I mic'd a #19 wire (.043) the scale on the bridge showed 19.5.

I called Samick and they sent me a similar scale as to what is on the bridge.

The exception is that in the high treble, where I show 8 - 13.5 and 8 - 13's, they show

6 - 14
10 - 13.5

Again these numbers are half a number higher than what I mic'd.

Originally, I started to restring based on the scale from Samick, using the factory numbers, but using Mapes IGS with the corresponding number. That's when I heard that wire from Asian market pianos can be 1/2 size different than the American scale. I'm unable to find any definitive data on that, however.

Now I fear I may be putting a wire on this piano that is 1/2 size larger than what it's supposed to be. Unsure of which scale to use now, I measured everything and input all the data in ScaleRipper and uploaded the file on yousendit.com.

Anyone that can take a look at the data and offer some help would be much appreciated. Here's the link for the scale ripper download.

This first link is the Samick data using Mapes sized wire. In other words, possibly 1/2 size too big.

This is the data I input based on what I mic'd. This is what was removed from the piano.

Let me know if you want the file emailed directly. I put it on yousendit.com because I was unsure of the file making it through the filters on the pianotech list. Let me know if you want the file emailed directly. The downloads are safe.

The bass strings I'm not worried about. They were mic'd, measured and ordered from Heller Bass in Germany. They just arrived last week. The bass data in the scale ripper files are based on what was removed from the piano. I still had those at home...

The good news is that I've only done about 15 notes. So as unthinkable as it is of having to rewire those, it's a whole lot better than finding out after I was all done! :-)

Thanks for any and all help.

Regards,

Rob McCall
