Hi,
You can also use a smaller tip that contacts the tuning pin higher than you are comfortable with for those few pins.

  The thin walled tip is not just for square grands. They can be used on some spinets where the tuning pins are very close together, and on grands where the pins are too close to the plate.

Today I tuned a restored square grand however two of the tuning pins were 
impossible to tune with the standard star tip.

Who has a thin walled star tuning tip for square grands ?
