No, schraffed strings are when they rough up the core wire to help very thin
wrap wire to hold tightly.

 

But sorry, I can't remember what to call this technique - I would call it
"back-wrapping the end. "

My Mapes pricelist lists "Schraffed Piano Strings". I believe that's the
term you're hunting for.
