I reconditioned the piano several months ago and tightened all 
action screws, re-pinned many hammer flanges, several wippens, 
filed hammers, did a complete regulation.  It's none of the 
obvious things as far as I can tell, but thanks.

Have you tried tightening the whippen screw. I have found when 
you have an unacceptable sound comminjg from the action  on the 
down stroke   it is usually from the hammer flange or the 
hammer. On the up stroke it is usually the whippen flange.
