[pianotech] EARTHQUAKE FACTORY DAMAGE - KAWAI AND YAMAHA

Rob and List,

Hamamatsu is near a south-facing coastline south of Tokyo. Our staff felt
the earthquake very strongly, and the buildings were evacuated as a
precaution.

The tsunami was weakened by distance and the shape of the coastline, so when
it got to the area it was easily stopped by the very high tsunami barriers
in the area. The Kawai Ryuyo factory is very close to the beach (I’m
guessing ½ mile max), so had it been in Sendai it would have been wiped out.
But as it was, no damage at all.

I have attached a photo of me standing on top of the tsunami barrier near
our factory. This was taken last year in February.

Subject: [pianotech] EARTHQUAKE FACTORY DAMAGE - KAWAI AND YAMAHA

I was wondering if anyone has heard any news about damage to the Yamaha and
Kawai piano factories in Japan. From what I understand they are located
somewhat near the coast.

Current estimate is over 10,000 deaths, countless missing, homeless
everywhere, undrinkable water, and major damage throughout the country, not
just at ground zero. Pianos are heavy objects subject to falling over and
being tossed around, particularly if they are boxed up and stacked high for
shipping.
