Sorry, I was thinking sustain pedal. Have you checked the glue joints of the lyre? Maybe the vertical posts have dropped down enough to cause the large gap.

  What gap are you referring to? I've never heard of shimming the action frame. Where, or what are you proposing to shim? If you're referring to the trapwork play, it is always better to add a shim (punching) at the pitman rod first, not the back of the pedal. More "effective" lost motion is created (and restored) at the pitman than the pedal rod. Continually adding leather shims in the "well" at the rear of the pedal eventually creates action dampening in the trapwork. This is why Steinway didn't provide a pedal rod adjustment.

    The shift on my S&S has about a 1/2" - 5/8" gap. Should I shim the action frame or add leather to the shift lever at the pedal rod?
