Doug,

I suspect the reason you are sensing a lot of spring force on the jack 
is that it has to be set very strong for the rep lever to support the 
heavy hammers.  If you were to replace the hammers with ones that gave 
you a down weight in the 50 gram range, and regulated the rep springs 
appropriately, the jack spring would feel right.
