Btw, While I was having a heck of a time getting the new grommets on the sticker wires, I thought maybe if I enlarged the fiber nut holes-just slightly-that it would make them go on easier, but still be snug on the threads. It worked like a charm, and now I can twist them on in mere seconds where before it required a vice grips holding the wires and a pliers to force the on! That's exactly what I ended up doing yesterday! I used by orange handled flush nippers and just cut the fiber nuts off! Much faster than trying to unscrew them. And yes, the wire threads on this whitney are covered with crud, making the new grommets difficult to install without the fiber nut popping OUT of the rubber housing! But once they get past the first few threads they turn much easier. Not a fun job, but somebody's got to do it...I guess! I use my flush side cut nippers to cut a chunk off the composite square, then use the same tool to pry off the reminder. The ends of the wires are usually covered with mouse excretement marking their territory in our area so cleaning the ends of the wires is advised. That's the tough item for me. imatunr at srvinet.com www.mothergoosetools.com ----- Original Message ----- From: pianolover 88 To: pianotech at ptg.org Sent: Monday, February 27, 2012 9:37 AM Subject: [pianotech] square rubber grommets Client with an old Whitney Kimball spinet with those square rubber grommets that pop into the forked end of the keys. As soon as I played the piano I noticed that the keys made a clicking sound, and knew that it was caused from the grommets having become hard and "fused" to the forks. I happened to have a couple new ones with me, and explained what needed to be done. As I proceeded to pop one off, it shattered to pieces. I replaced it with a new one and the clicking was gone. So I'll be replacing the whole set. Luckily, the elbows are wood and not that old, yellowing and brittle plastic! So my question is, what would be the fastest most efficient way to remove and install the new grommets? I'm thinking a socket that fits that little square nut, which by the way, the old ones remain on the sticker wire after the old hard rubber breaks apart, and is almost rusted in place, making it hard to get off! So, once all the old grommets and nuts are removed, and the wires cleaned and lubed, would it easiest just to twist all the new ones on my hand, or use a screwdriver socket?
