I agree...I find dry chalk a mess and does not leave a clear reliable mark.

Instead I use lumberyard chalk powder, the stuff you use for carpenter 
chaulk lines. Make a paste with the chaulk and water and brush it on. 
Works better than anything else I've tried yet.  Red is more color fast 
than the blue.
