I usually use brass capstans when replacing. The newer ones also have a more rounded edge than the older ones which can be a benefit if the angled capstan doesn't match up exactly to the new wippen heal angle. I think that can be a source of unwanted friction. The WNG aluminum ones will save you a couple grams of TW though if you need that and I suppose they don't need polishing. Are you saying that using the WNG shanks livened up the sound?
