Yes, most square grands have thinner plates, but they are still quite capable of holding tensions of the time of design. In fact, many were designed for tensions/pitches far higher than modern designs. Mass, in cast iron does not translate into strength! And, unless, patrick upped the scale to a High Tension Scale, the most that would happen is Cheek Lift. It is, also, common for hitch pins to fail, as most were nothing more than nails, made out of soft maleable steel.
